Wine of the month – October


Our nights are now drawing in. Those hot summer days seem like a distant memory. The Angel Inn’s ivy now a blazing red. Autumn is certainly upon us.
For Octobers wine addition, I looked for a wine perfect for those autumnal evenings, a wine with spice and dominance, something to warm the soul.

For me, this has to be a Shiraz and with the end of the month bringing the gouls and the goblins out to play, “Spitting Spider” seems so fitting. A Shiraz. So aptly named.
Spitting Spider, considered an easy drinking Shiraz, is made by the Dowie Doole boys (Norm Doole and Drew Dowie). Originally the winery was producing fruit for other wineries, but these friends soon became frustrated, watching all their hard labour fly off into the sunset, their names not embellishing the label of the final wines created. With this very much on their minds the boys went on to establish their own McLaren Vale winery in the mid- nineties and it didn’t take long for Dowie Doole to stand for the best characteristics of this region in South Australia, particularly in their Shiraz based wines.

Spitting Spider Shiraz, the name of this wine comes from a species of spider (Scytodes Thoracica) found both in Britain and Australia, and perhaps in the dark corners of the wine cellar. It’s the only spider family known to kill its prey by spitting, but, don’t worry, its completely harmless to humans!
The wine itself is bright ruby red in colour, smooth and velvety on the palate and for me it bursts with dark, spicy fruit flavours, the perfect poison for the soul.
So, why not stop by The Angel at Hetton, warm up by one of our roaring fires during this Autumn season, a glass of Spitting Spider surely to hand.

A wine with no tricks… only treats.
