Wine of the month – October
‘The Pol Roger Collection’
I close my eyes
Her arms surround me
She begins to rock me from side to side
I find myself dancing to her breath
I open my eyes
Only to watch you leave me
She takes you away from me
One by one, I watch you fall
You leave me bare
Naked and alone
But still I stand tall
A skeleton of my former self
She takes from me with every breath
Yet still, I dance to her whispers
Spring will bring you back to me
But for now, I’ll say goodbye…
Autumn is definately here now. The trees are losing their leaves, the days seem to be getting shorter and don’t get me started on the constant rain. October is the month where there’s nothing better than staying indoors, sheltered from the Autumnal weather. However, October is also the month of my birth, so let’s forget about the weather and celebrate!
Will you join me with a glass of fizz?
New to our list here at The Angel at Hetton is the Pol Roger Collection: three sublime champagnes from one of the last family owned champagne estates in Epemay. Founded in 1849, Pol Roger Champagne has been loved by so many (and rightly so) from royality to politicians, with one name standing out above all others: Sir Winston Churchill.
The relationship between Champagne Pol Roger and Sir Winston Churchill was a truly special one – so much so, that he drank an estimated 42,000 bottles in his lifetime. It was documented that Churchill was drinking Champagne with his meals. Before the meal whisky, Cognac afterwards, but Champagne always with the meal.
So how about we explore our three Pol Roger Champagnes with a three-course meal. But where to begin?
Blanc de Blancs Vintage 2012
Considered the perfect aperitif, this 2012 vintage Blanc de Blancs from Pol Roger is made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes, harvested from the five Grands Crus of the Côte des Blancs: Oiry, Choully, Cramant, Avize and Oger. Limited quantity and 7 years aging make for a Champagne not to be missed.
Light gold, straw yellow in colour, the scent of this delightful champagne recalls flowers and citrus fruits, elements that make this wine elegant and extremely complex. Once poured in the glass it ooses hints of fresh butter, acacia and honey.
On initial taste, you may find this Champagne dominated by the minerals that characterise the lands of which the grapes where harvested. It will certainly take you on a journey to the vineyards of Côte des Blancs that’s for sure.
It is the persistent aftertaste of this Blanc de Blancs which will keep you satisfied through any starter and leave you with a lasting impression of the luxury Pol Roger has to offer.
Sir Winston Churchill 2009
The new vintage of Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is always a ‘hotly-anticipated’ release and 2009 is no exception and the perfect accompanyment to any main course.
This is Pol Roger’s top cuvée, the house’s homage to their most famous client and certainly worthy of being paired with any main event. The grapes are all from Grand Cru vineyards which were under vine during Churchill’s lifetime and only made in the best vintages. It’s made in a style which Churchill favoured: robust, mature and long-lived.
The wine has an inviting, bright golden hue, and a fine, regular stream of bubbles. At first the refined nose exudes subtle hints of brioche and sweet spice combining with citrus flavours and floral fragrances.
As the wine warms in the glass, it becomes more powerful and the nose develops complex notes of toasted nuts and honeycomb. The palate is round and creamy supported by notes of fresh fruit, with a long, powerful and truly memorable finish.
“I have to agree with Churchill: Champagne is definately a delightful drink to enjoy with a meal… It is my birthday afterall…”
Our final addition to our Pol Roger collection at The Angel at Hetton is: Pol Roger Brut Réserve Non-Vintage. This Champagne was, infact, served at the reception following the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle back in 2018. It therefore seems the perfect way to end a meal.
Pol Roger is reveared for its ability to produce each year a blend which is consistent in style and quality. Elegant and refined, this cuvée is the champagne for all occasions.
The Brut Réserve is a blend in equal parts of the three champagne grape varieties: pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay from 30 different crus. It displays a beautiful golden straw colour, as well as an abundance of fine bubbles. It holds a powerful and attractive nose, first delivering aromas of fruit and then releasing light flavours of honeysuckle and white jasmine, lingering on vanilla and brioche notes.
The wine has a harmonious and a pleasant freshness, whilst still preserving structure. On the palate, flavours of cooked fruit (quince jelly, apricot jam might come to mind) these flavours lending beautifully to any dessert.
This Champagne is truly outstanding, one fit for royalty and us mere ‘common folk’ alike.
So why not join us at The Angel at Hetton for a little Champagne, one bottle, two, or maybe even all three with your meal…
