The Angel’s awards and Michelin Star recognition
At The Angel at Hetton, we believe that recognition is not an end destination, but a reflection of a consistent, daily standard. Set in the quiet heart of the Yorkshire Dales, our establishment was built on a shared vision between co-owners Michael Wignall, and James and Jo Wellock. For us, every accolade is an acknowledgement that our commitment to an “intentionally edited” experience—where the Dales, the people, and the plate meet—is being felt by our guests and the wider culinary community.
As one of the premier fine dining destinations in the UK, we strive to deliver cooking of real precision without the performance of theatre. Whether you are a dedicated foodie or a traveller planning a sophisticated getaway through professional guides, we invite you to explore the story behind our recent accolades and 2026 restaurant rankings.
A Legacy of Precision: The Michelin Star
The journey of The Angel has been defined by our rapid and sustained ascent in the world of best fine dining in the UK. Within his first year at the helm, Michael and his team were awarded a Michelin star in the 2020 Michelin UK & Ireland Guide. This achievement came hot on the heels of four AA Rosettes—a distinction reserved for restaurants that exhibit intense ambition, a passion for excellence, and remarkable consistency.
For Michael, the star is a result of a philosophy where “nothing is added without a reason”. We are incredibly proud to share that in February 2026, Michael and the team successfully retained their Michelin star. This continued recognition highlights Michael’s renowned instinct for restraint and his ability to create dishes that are detailed and complex but never overworked.
A Curated Journey: Our Dining Experience
To experience our Michelin-starred recognition is to partake in a multi-sensory journey where every element has a role. Our menus are designed to be thoughtfully paced and understated, allowing the quality of the ingredients to take centre stage.
Lunch at The Angel
We offer three distinct ways to experience our kitchen during the day, each reflecting the season’s shift:
Five Course Tasting: A precision-led exploration of textures and flavours designed for the daytime palate.
Taste of the Season: A curated menu that remains deeply grounded in the Yorkshire landscape.
Sunday Lunch: A refined, elevated take on a British staple, delivered with our signature standard of excellence.
The Dinner Experience at The Angel
In the evening, the dining room stays composed as we present our most comprehensive culinary narratives:
Five Course Tasting: A focused sequence designed to showcase the balance between flavour and acidity.
Ten Course Tasting: Our most immersive experience. This is where the interplay of elements are explored in full, moving from a concept in a drawing to a perfectly balanced plate.
A Signature Start: Breakfast at The Angel
The experience does not end with dinner. We believe that every meal should be an event to be savoured. Guests staying with us enjoy an incredible five-course tasting menu experience for breakfast, ensuring that the same level of professional precision found in our Michelin-starred menus guides the very start of your day.
Recognised by the UK’s Leading Guides
For those who rely on professional rankings to discover the finest culinary experiences, The Angel at Hetton continues to feature prominently among the top tier of British establishments. Our commitment to quality has earned us significant placements in the most respected annual lists:
Harden’s Top 100 Restaurants: We are honoured to be named #22 in the Harden’s Guide top 100. This guide is particularly meaningful as it is driven by the feedback of diners.
Square Meal Top 100: This year, The Angel was awarded the no.26 spot among the Top 100 Restaurants in the UK, a testament to our standing in the national culinary scene.
Top 50 Gastropubs: We are currently ranked no.6, a ranking that acknowledges our heritage as a historic inn while celebrating our evolution into a world-class destination.
The Ultimate Foodie Getaway: Best Restaurant with Rooms
We have always believed that the experience of The Angel should be savoured over time, allowing the silence and pace of the Dales to sink in. Our interiors, designed by co-owner Jo Wellock, are a blend of Scandinavian and Japanese simplicity, grounded in the Yorkshire landscape to ensure a seamless transition from the fells to your bedroom.
In September 2022, this holistic approach was recognised when we were named the Best Restaurant with Rooms in England. During this time, we also reached the pinnacle of AA recognition, retaining our 5 AA Rosettes. It is this combination of world-class food and “unfussy” luxury that led Country & Town House to recommend The Angel as a premier destination for a foodie getaway.
The Craft Behind the Awards
Our awards are earned through relationships and a shared obsession with detail. This is evident in the physical objects that define our dining room:
The Tableware: Our pottery and crockery are hand-made locally by local potter Dave Green. Each piece is designed to contribute to the harmony of the dish it holds.
The Tools: Our knives, designed by Michael, are a story of global quality with local soul. They feature Japanese steel—the best in the world—and handles that encase moss collected from around The Angel in resin.
The Environment: Even the kitchen itself was designed to be softened and calm, using wooden touches and black finishes rather than traditional stainless steel. Michael wanted a creative workspace that reflects the ethos of the food: functional, purposeful, and free of clutter.
A Responsibility Beyond the Plate
Part of being a leading restaurant in 2026 is understanding our responsibility to the environment and our community. Our commitment to sustainability often goes unseen, but it is a vital part of our standard:
During our renovation, we made a significant investment in a specialised electric energy-saving system, more commonly found in super yachts. This allows us to distribute power efficiently without exceeding the 300KW limit of our village, ensuring we don’t disrupt the local power grid. We also prioritise reducing waste through our Nordaq water filtration system and support a local Eco Laundry Business, started by the co-owners’ son, Ralph Wellock.
Whether you settle at the bar—built around a single curved piece of reclaimed local wood—or join us for a ten-course tasting, the experience is guided by the same thread: a shared obsession with details without the fuss.
