Angel at Hetton - Food


We pride ourselves on our attentive service and our award-winning food – made with the highest quality ingredients from our local area and further afield.

Since opening in September 2018, The Angel has received numerous awards including a Michelin star just 12 months after opening, four AA Rosettes and it was placed number 2 in the National Restaurant Awards Top 100 Restaurants. In 2022 the restaurant received fourth place in the Top 50 Gastropubs, with chef patron Michael Wignall being crowned 2022 Chef of the Year.

About Michael

Food has been Michael’s life since studying catering at Preston College. He started out his cooking career at Broughton Park then followed head chef Paul Heathcote to his new restaurant two years later. Since then he has worked in Spain and France, plus restaurants including the Burlington at the Devonshire Arms and the Latymer at Pennyhill Park. In 2016 he moved to Gidleigh Park and retained the restaurant’s two Michelin stars. Two years later he took the helm at The Angel together with wife Johanna and James and Josephine Wellock.

His food is modern, technical and meaningful – the Michelin Guide said his dishes at The Angel demonstrate: ‘a natural simplicity that allows every ingredient on the plate to shine’.
